Good waves for great field of surfers at Corona

Today at Middles beach a historic field of surfing talent completed tworounds of competition in both the Mens and Womens divisions. On a rising swell, the field was narrowed to 32 men and eight women who will battle on Sunday for the titles.
The day began with 2-3 ft sets but increased all day until sets were arriving in the evening in the 5-6 ft... range. APSPR President Werner Vega predicts the swell to continue torise tomorrow. Surf fans will see the most gifted group of visiting pros in the ten year history of the Corona Extra circuit, including Mainland pros Gabe Kling, Ben Bourgeois, and Asher Nolan. Also providing anoutstanding performance was Hawaiian Kekoa Bacalso. Tomorrow these lucky visitors will have their hands full with the cream of the local PuertoRican surfers, led by APSPR ratings leader Brian Toth. Another localfavorite Dylan Graves also advanced from his heat today by grabbing thesecond highest score of the day, an 8.50. But the top score of the daywent to Asher Nolan, of Jacksonville, Florida who shattered a head highrighthander on his backhand for an 8.60. The men are competing for arecord $25,000 in prize money, with first place taking home a check for$10,000.
In the Women’s division, local surfer Liza Caban had the highest total score in her quest to secure the $5000 first prize fromthe total purse of $12,000. Currently leading the APSPR season rankingsfor 2011 is Lisalie Gonzales, who kept alive her chances for the titleby advancing to tomorrow’s quarter-finals. Gonzales will go againstCaban and another Puerto Rican, Idalis Alvarado, as well as AlexisEngstrom, from Hawaii. All of the advancing women in the otherquarter-final are from the Mainland: Anastasia Ashley, Amy Nicholl,Karina Petroni and Jasset Unbel. The best wave score of the day went toUmbel, with a 6.93
